A Kaua‘i Community Cloth

In January of 2003, Circles of Light initiated this project which offers youth and adults an opportunity to help create small banners representing what it means to be a part of the Kaua‘i community. Participants paint images and words on small pieces of cloth, which are stitched together to make small banners to be hung in community centers around the island. We are happy to have offered this workshop at Nana's House in Waimea, Kekaha Ha'aheo Housing, Lihue Court, and Hanapepe Art Night so far this year.

After School Art

Circles of Light offered free art projects for youth at the Kekaha Neighborhood Center weekly in November and December. The program was supported by volunteers from the community and included a variety of art projects for school age youth.

Around the World: A Program of Art, Health and Culture

From June 2002 through August 2003 Circles of Light offered weekly workshops in art, health and culture at Kekaha Ha'aheo Housing Complex on Kaua‘i, through a contract with the State of Hawai‘i, Housing and Community Development Corporation, through a grant from the Public Housing Drug Elimination Program of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The program offered participants of all ages opportunities to share in creative and educational workshops led by artists and teachers in the community.

Breakfast With Santa

Circles of Light provided Christmas craft activities for children and youth at this annual event held at Kukui Grove. Proceeds from the event are used to support programs of the Salvation Army.

Bridging Cultures Across the Rainbow

In June Circles of Light worked in collaboration with the Cradleboard Teaching Project and Ka Ipu Haa to offer youth from around Kaua‘i an afternoon of art, cooking, and cultural teachings. The event featured Native American food as well as craft projects from the Native American and Hawai‘ian cultures. A highlight of the event included cultural teachings by Buffy Sainte-Marie and Puna Kalama Dawson. For more information on the Cradleboard Teaching Project, visit The Cradleboard Teaching Project.

Creating Our World

Circles of Light has been offering this creative arts workshop to youth at Lihue Court Townhomes. The workshops focus on creative goal-setting and self-expression. The series features art, writing, and collaborative cultural projects.

Gather the Women

On March 8, Circles of Light offered a creative arts workshop for women at Mahina's Guest House on Kaua‘i, to celebrate International Women's Day. This was offered in conjunction with women's gatherings around the world as part of a special week-long celebration initiated by Gather the Women, an international coalition. For more information, visit their website, Gather the Women.

Hanapepe Art Nights

Circles of Light offered free art projects to local and visiting families and youth at the Hanapepe Art Nights in June, July, and August. Projects included the Kaua‘i Community Cloth, sand painting, and mobiles.

Kaua‘i PowWow

Circles of Light offered art projects at this annual event held each October at the Kapa'a Beach Park. Children and adults created corn husk dolls from natural materials at our table, while enjoying the teachings, food, and crafts of the Native American culture at this community celebration.

Keiki Story Festival in Hanapepe

Circles of Light offered mask making opportunities for youth and family members at this annual event in Lihue. The day included a variety of literacy-based activities sponsored by several community-based organizations. At the Circles of Light table, masks were created to represent favorite characters from books and well-known stories.

Nana's House Open House for Kaua‘ian Days

Circles of Light offered creative art projects for youth and family members as part of this Kaua‘ian Days celebration on January 25. Mahalo to Nana's House for inviting us to participate in this event.

YWCA Candlelight Vigil

In October, the YWCA held a vigil at St. Michael and All Angels Church to honor victims and survivors of domestic violence. Circles of Light was a participant in this year's program, offering art projects and an opportunity for youth and adults to be a part of The Hands Project. Please see the Global Connections page for more information about this project.
