At the Circles of Light table, masks were created to represent favorite characters from books and well-known stories.

.We were happy to participate again in this holiday event for young children. Youth created specially-designed Christmas ornaments to take home for their family trees. The event was a fundraiser for the Salvation Army.

Creating Our World

Participation in the Kaua'i PowWow

Circles of Light offered free art projects to youth and adults at the Kaua'i PowWow in October.  Children learned how to make corn husk dolls and used natural materials to design and create their own doll.  We appreciated the opportunity to participate in this annual cultural event.

Bridging Cultures Across the Rainbow

In June Circles of Light worked in collaboration with the Cradleboard Teaching Project and Ka Ipu Haa to offer youth from around Kaua'i an afternoon of art, cooking, and cultural teachings.  The event featured Native American food as well as craft projects from the Native American and Hawaiian cultures.  A highlight of the event included cultural teachings by Buffy Sainte-Marie and Puna Kalama Dawson.  For more information on the Cradleboard Teaching Project, visit www.cradleboard.org.

Around the World:
A Program of Art, Health and Culture

From June 2002 through August 2003 Circles of Light offered weekly workshops in art, health and culture at Kekaha Ha'aheo Housing Complex on Kaua'i, through a contract with the State of Hawai'i, Housing & Community Development Corporation, through a grant from the Public Housing Drug Elimination Program of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.  The program offered participants of all ages opportunities to share in creative and educational workshops led by artists and teachers in the community.

A Kaua'i Community Cloth

In January of 2003, Circles of Light initiated this project which offers youth and adults an opportunity to help create small banners representing what it means to be a part of the Kaua'i community.  Participants paint images and words on small pieces of cloth, which are stitched together to make small banners to be hung in community centers around the island.  We are happy to have offered this workshop at Nana's House in Waimea, Kekaha Ha'aheo Housing, Lihu'e Court, and Hanapepe Art Night so far this year.

Gather the Women

On March 8, Circles of Light offered a creative arts workshop for women at Mahina's Guest House on Kaua'i, to celebrate International Women's Day.  This was offered in conjunction with women's gatherings around the world as part of a special week-long celebration initiated by Gather the Women, an international coalition.  For more information, visit their website, www.gatherthewomen.org.
