A Day of Aloha at Kukui Grove in Lihue, Kaua‘i

Circles of Light was a participating organization in a special event on Kaua‘i to commemorate the events of September 11, 2001. Young poets read poems sharing their visions and hopes for our world, and work from The Visions Project was displayed, along with photos of quilt panels sent from Circles of Light to The Children's Cloth of Many Colors. See the Global Connections page for more information on these projects.

A Family Summit at Waimea High School

Circles of Light offered sand painting and featured the Visions Project art show at this family-based event in November. Several community-based organizations were a part of the event, sponsored by Waimea High School.

Awakening the WisdomWithin

In April, Circles of Light offered a workshop for adolescents at the Hawai‘i International School on Kaua‘i. The workshop focused on encouraging youth to discover their personal strengths and goals, and to choose symbols and images which represent their own unique wisdom and creative abilities. Everyone made, learned to play, and decorated a didjeridu, an ancient instrument from the Australian Aboriginal culture.

Breakfast With Santa

On December 7, 2002, Circles of Light offered young children and their families an opportunity to create Christmas ornaments as part of "Breakfast With Santa" at Kukui Grove. The event was sponsored by the Kaua‘i and Kalepa Sunrise Rotary Clubs and was a fundraiser for programs of the Salvation Army. The event featured visits from Santa and Russell the Rooster and friends. Mahalo to the Rotary Clubs for inviting us to decorate one of the Winter Wonderland Christmas trees with our ornaments.

Celebrate the Creative Spirit!

Since January 2001, Circles of Light has been offering workshops in the creative arts to children, teens, and families on Kaua‘i. Participants create art and writing in multi-generational community settings. We offer sincere thanks to the Hanapepe Art Center, the Hanapepe Hawai‘ian Congregational Church, neighborhood centers through the County of Kaua‘i, and the Boys and Girls Club of Waimea for hosting these workshops.

Community Art Shows

Circles of Light began sharing the work of children and family members who attend classes through occasional community art shows, beginning in the Spring of 2001. Circles of Light is grateful to the Hanapepe Art Center on the West side of Kaua‘i for hosting these exhibits, which help to spread the bright, creative energy of children, teens, and adults.

Discovering and Experiencing Nature

In March, Circles of Light offered a one-day excursion for young girls and their family members to the Kawainui Marsh in Kailua on the island of O'ahu. The event offered an experience of the Hawai‘ian culture through teachings about the land and care of the environment, with a focus on the wise use of our natural resources. The day included stories, chants, information about the history of the area, and an opportunity to participate in a simple environmental project. Mahalo nui loa to Ahahui Malama I Ka Lokahi, caretakers of the Kawainui Marsh, for allowing us to offer this special event.

Drawing On Our Strengths

In January and February, Circles of Light offered workshops focusing on holistic health to children and adults at the Kaua‘i Family Violence Shelter. The workshops used movement, art, sound, and writing to facilitate a sense of physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Sharing Our Stories

In February and March, Circles of Light offered workshops in creative writing for pre-teens, teens, and adults. These workshops included writing and art activities which encouraged self-expression in a relaxed community atmosphere. We are grateful to the County of Kaua‘i for offering workshop space for this series.
